Job Description | Technical Editor, Technical Communications, Location: Palo Alto, CA Job Description The Technical Editor is responsible for editing technical product information, including end-user and developer product documentation, Web pages, and Knowledge Base articles. VMware Technical Editors work closely with writers to apply the principles of minimalist writing, task-based writing, and content reuse strategies to their content. Technical Editors also work with information architects and members of other departments, such as Legal, Web Marketing, Localization, and User Experience to ensure the quality of product information. Responsibilities Provide technical editing services for the Technical Communications department. Edit installation guides, system administration guides, and user guides for a technical audience. Assist with the definition of DITA XML usage guidelines. Assist with the design and architecture of customer documentation. Ensure that VMware customer documentation meets VMware quality standards. Work with the Editing team to maintain the VMware Style Guide and update it as necessary. Work with technical publications managers and project managers to ensure timely editing of documentation. Requirements BA or BS degree in English, Journalism, or related field Excellent verbal, writing, and communication skills. 4+ years experience as a technical editor at high tech software companies. Able to perform major restructuring and rewriting of documents. Clear understanding of the software development process. Able to work in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines. Familiar with DITA, HTML, online help systems, and content management systems. Must understand editing requirements for translation, localization, and globalization. Pluses Experience working in a structured authoring environment. Experience with XMetal (or other XML editing tool) and Trisoft CMS. Project management experience. Experience editing documentation intended for IT users. |
